Well, it’s not a huge mystery that the rave scene is in a bit of a slump right now. With shows consistently coming up short, it’s not making it easy of any of our local promoters. Some of them losing up to $20,000. I mean that kind of hit has to hurt! Even the biggest show of the year, Summerlove, fell short of it’s goals. I heard they were expecting around 15 ( 000 ), and the actual turnout was around 8. I’ve talked to numerous promoters, Azim, Deliverance, Jessi J, and they all told the same story. The scene is just slow right now. No one can has really come up with any reasons. So I have done some thinking on it and come up with these.
1) Too many big, expensive shows. Remember back in the day when it was 20 bucks. Now tickets range from 40 – 80. People just can’t afford it.
2) The club scene has come a long way. Clubs are starting to get really good! They are getting good dj’s, good setups, and venues. There is still that lingering problem that the doors close at 2 am, but they still offer alot of what raves offer. Which means competition.
3) Alot of people are burnt out on the scene. It is a fact that people like to try stuff that’s cool and new. And that was the reason for alot of people getting into the rave scene. But now that the scene is past that phase, alot of people are dropping out.
If anyone has any more they would like to add to the list, please email them.
I am not saying all shows are losing money, but alot of them are. I think we’ll be seeing alot of shows with downsized budgets and lineups coming up in the future. But to me there is no real difference between a big name and our local talent. It’s just that the big names have been in the magazines and put out a few tracks. But they are all spinning the same records when it comes right down to it.
