Going deeper underground

Promoters in Ibiza have had plenty of attention from the police recently, but they should be happy theyre not in America, the land of the “free”.

The club industry is probably the most visible on the island, but if recent worldwide trends are followed then its heading back underground. According to the Ibiza Sun the Ibiza Town council is studying new and more stringent ways of controlling the dynamic publicity that plagues the port area. Presently the venues are allowed two flyerers each, but under the new proposals these jobs would go too.

They also announced that the big discos had signed a code of conduct agreement with regards to the volume and propriety, or lack of it, of the famously wild parades. However, this attempt to tranquilise the scene looks positively restrained in comparison to the approach in the States, where the authorities method is about as subtle as a bullet to the head.

The Washington Post reports that the Reducing Americans Vulnerability to Ecstasy Act of 2002 (or RAVE Act snappy, huh?) is in the process of becoming law. If passed then promoters could be held responsible if the courts could prove that the organisers knew people would be taking illegal drugs at their events.

It goes on to say that congressional findings submitted with the bill label as drug paraphernalia such rave mainstays as bottled water, chill out rooms and glowsticks.

Without wanting to go into the gory details, if you put on a party and got done under these regulations, you could liable for something astronomical like 250 grand $US, or twice the gross proceeds of your gig. Nonpayment of fines equals jail. Nervous now?
