David Guetta @ Celebrities (Vancouver, Canada)

David GuettaA mediocre DJ who plays to large audiences gets the dance floor on his bandwagon by pinpointing the lowest common denominator and taking them all for a cheap ride. A great DJ that plays to large audiences finds the unifying factor among us all and cultivates it through track selection and mixing. I never figured out this clubbing conundrum ‘til David Guetta turned Celebrities into the most bursting party I have ever experienced in Vancouver. From the moment I arrived until the last chord of his last track Guetta had us all dancing in the palms of his hands.

Guetta is known for his euro electro and that’s what he played mostly but he gave us some vocal house, remixes of oldies, progressive house, and techno fit for a Hacker. No one cared which way he was headed; Guetta kneaded the beats in such a way that we were all pliable and willing. It’s like he knew our taste in music better than we did. Or better yet, he figured out what our starved sweet spots were and zoned in.

I’ve never seen that kind of energy at Celebrities before. First of all, you are compelled to smile and bounce because the energy he gives off is so wholesome and happy. When a DJ enjoys himself that much you can’t be put off, even if you’re not into the music. However, by the end of his set, he was up on the booth bouncing to the beat and people were totally going off. When the set was over, the lights came on way too quickly and not one individual left the dance floor. The club swelled with cheers and though the lights stayed on he played an encore set. The last two tracks were Blur’s Song 2 and Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit. Everyone at the club was jumping and you could feel the floor giving. It was fucking unbelievable.

I cannot critique his mixing. Guetta plays with CDJs and as far as I’m concerned the possibilities with CDJs are endless and it’s pointless for me to try to follow along. However, Timeline told me Guetta settled into his set with three CDJs all going at once (which sounds impressive) and  he had a stack of a capella songs (i.e. Donna Summer’s I Feel Love) that he was overlaying on all sorts of beats. CDJs are still so unattractive but the possibilities are simply endless and they are slowly winning me over.

Alvaro does it again: bringing new talent to Vancouver and sweeping the lucky individuals who trust his judgment right of their feet into a disco paradise.
