Colette’s New Album is Pure Pleasure

dj collete

I had the pleasure interviewing Colette while she was here in Vancouver on her North American tour promoting her new album “Push”. After the interview I went to see Colette dj at ‘Shine’ nightclub here in Vancouver. Colette opened with one of my favourite tracks from ‘Push’ called ‘About us’ and sang live to all her own songs. She has an amazing voice and is great to see live, especially as she sings and dj’s at the same time! The crowd loved her and the dance floor was packed.

L: You’re here to promote your new album “Push” how’s the album been doing since its release?

C: It just came out 2 weeks ago and its been doing pretty good. I’m just really excited to finally release it.

L: Your album release tour is taking you across the US and Canada, any plans for a worldwide tour?

C: I’m touring North America till the end of the year and then next year we are planning to go overseas to promote “Push”.

L: What countries are you hoping to go too?

C: Hopefully another tour in Asia. I just did one there and Brazil and then we’d love to go back to Europe.

L: I loved “Push” my favourite track is “About us” the Chuck Love Rework. Do you have a particular favourite track?

C: I really love all the songs, I kind of have to. I always write more songs than what I need for the record and really try to pick the songs that I love and I definitely loved each of them for different reasons. “Funny” is definitely one of my favourite songs that I did with Black Spade and “If” is another one that I really enjoy performing and it’s the second single that’s coming out. For all different reasons I like different elements of each of the songs.

L: On “Push” you collaborated with Chuck Love and Black Spade and in the past you’ve also worked alongside label mates DJ Sneak, Mark Farina and Kaskade on the “House of OM” series. What has it been like working alongside some of these well known dj’s / artists?

C: I grew up in Chicago and it was such a blessing to grow up there because it definitely changed my musical landscape and so many great producers live there, so everyone really becomes this tight nit family all working together. It was definitely cool but at the time you’re just friends hanging out making music so you can almost take it for granted.

Working with Sneak when I first started writing music was really fun and I love his music production and he’s been putting out so many great songs for years. What was really exciting for me was recently Derek Carter remixed “About Us” and was the first time he’s remixed any of my music.

L: You grew up having formal operatic training, did you want to be an opera singer when you were younger?

C: I always wanted to be a singer even when I was really little like 4 years old. I told my Mom I wanted to sing and I joined a choir and started studying voice and at the time classical voice was really all that was offered to me. I never wanted to be a classical opera singer, that’s such a gift on its own and you really have to be born to do that style of singing and as much as I enjoyed it I wasn’t born to be an opera singer.

I started listening to house music when I was 10 and I knew as I got older that I gravitated more towards dance music and that made more sense for me.

L: You’re a very unique dj because you not on spin music but you add your own vocals to the tracks you spin. Do you think that has helped with your success?

C: Yes I think being able to perform the songs live and play them is a really fun combination, Chuck Love does that as well. I think it’s a nice connection for people to see the songs live and for me it’s really fun. I started djing just so I could sing live, I never really thought I’d be a dj because my main goal was always to become a singer so to be able to do both is really cool.

L: You’re also the founder of the ‘Super Jane Collective’ can you tell me a bit about that?

C: We just celebrated a decade of ‘Super Jane’, we don’t really play that often together anymore, we did do an anniversary event at the WMC with Smart Bar and its great that we can maintain a great friendship with all the women, it’s good to play together every now and then. Heather and I did the ‘House of OM’ last year and did the tour so that was really exciting for us, to have been friend’s for such along time and still play/dj together is really great.

L: Your track ‘Feelin Hypnotized’ was featured on ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ Soundtrack. How did they come to pick one of your tracks for the movie?

C: You know I really don’t know, it was the ‘Black Liquid Remix’ of ‘Feelin Hypnotized’ and they got my phone number and called me when I was shopping at a furniture store. They were saying “we’re putting the music together for The Devil Wears Prada”. I’d read the book, I think the year before and I knew Meryl Streep was going to be in it, so I knew it was this big film and I was so excited but of course on the phone I was “oh that’s great, contact my label” but inside I was thinking YEAH!!!

I have no idea how it happened and I’m really thankful that it did, it was such a wonderful opportunity for the music and I’m just really happy.

L: Do you think that having your track in the movie has helped you become more popular and well known?

C: I think anytime dance music has an opportunity to be in a film or on television it helps the genre in general, especially in the States where dance music is not really considered to be as relevant as other genres of music, so I think it kind of helps everybody.

L: It’s the same here in Canada, I’m from England where dance/house music is in the mainstream but here you don’t hear much of it on the radio.

C: It’s on the internet or shows at 2am in the morning but it’s definitely not in the mainstream. I think things are slowly changing, a couple years ago they added a category to The Grammy’s for best dance song, besides best dance remix or best dance album, I think little things like that keep pushing it forward.

L: Tonight you are djing at ‘Shine’ what kind of tracks will you be playing?

C: I play a mixture of my own songs from ‘Hypnotized’ and now from ‘Push’ and a couple other singles that I’ve released as well as playing music that I love, some very current and some classic tracks.

L: Thanks very much for your time and good luck with the album.
