DJs may play robot music but they themselves are not automatons. That’s why, when approached with the idea to do a world tour in support of his new album, Andres Trentemoller stated that he didn’t want to do “another laptop tour.” When he touched down in Vancouver he still had a laptop in tow but was also flanked by Mikael Simpson (guitar and bass) and Henrik Vibskov (drums). The trio rocked The Plaza’s very enthusiastic and large crowd for a solid 90 minutes of music… that was not robotic enough.
The sets I’ve burned into my brain over the past year are fun, young and eccentric. And danceable! They haven’t lost their place on my iTunes “Most Played” list and they’re great for late Saturdays and early Sundays. His music has attitude and the random samples give the mixes a sense of humor. The music that he played with his two cohorts was nothing like it. It was lovely and melodic but too grown up to be sweat inducing.
The crowd was quite ecstatic with the performance and the crew onstage looked inspired and content to be jamming for us. The visuals were amazing – great colour, clips and motifs that somehow worked their way into the music.
However, the music didn’t work its way into me so I left a bit dejected. Dance music is growing up it seems, maybe it’s time I did too?
