So we met in a fairly interesting way that had nothing to do with Djing at all.
I was having drinks at a local pub in Nelson, waiting for my buddies’ set to start and I had put my handbag on the barstool next to me. I was pretty much minding my own business and then came Shaun Brand, removing my handbag from the stool without question and placing it on the bar. We had met briefly the weekend before, talked about a few of our favorite producers and dj’s (Alex Metric, Stupid Fresh, Myles Dyson, Caspa, Bar 9, Chase & Status and Wolfgang Gartner,) he seemed to be an interesting enough guy and I was stoked for the company. All of a sudden there was this awful smell similar to that of burning flesh and then came the flames from my beautiful bag. He lit my freaking handbag on fire! Apparently this pub strategically placed little tea-lights everywhere and we didn’t notice until it was too late for my pretty little purse. So in exchange for destroying one of my favorite possessions, you could only imagine how mad I was, Shaun agreed to show me around the decks. With over 7 years of experience, I thought it was a fair trade. He also told me that he would buy me a new bag, but I still haven’t seen it.
Shaun got his Djing under way with other Nelson locals like Dj Bassment, Soup, Elfstyles, Big Jewels, Billy Bangers and Breaker. He started as a respectable Drum & Bass Dj and worked through many types of electronic music, evolving into the style he plays today which includes Electro House, Dub Step and Breaks.
Jessica Smith – a.k.a. Miss Muffin found her love for electronic music in England where she had lived for several years prior to the bag burning incident. Muffin lucked out and lived in Birmingham, West Midlands which housed a vibrant music scene and some of the industries finest. It was pretty hard not to get caught up in the glamorous nights and party scene. The Spring of 2008 brought Miss Muffin back to Canada and the Fall saw the start of Brand – Muffin.
There is a lot of energy and enthusiasm behind the decks with the two of us, we’re a lot of fun and definitely laugh at each other, a lot.
