This is a very common question because he uses a very unique DJ setup. Lots of cool sleek looking devices. I found a blog post by Jesse Brede that explains this mystery.
He’s running Abelton Live on a 17? G5 MacBook Pro ($2-3k) outputting to an Apoge Ensemble ($2k) soundcard. He’s using a 16×16 (256) Monome controller ($800) for what I’m not totally sure and a touch screen Lemur ($3k) made by Jazz Mutant to control his effects. He’s running 4 stereo outs from his Ensemble to whatever club mixer is at hand, in our case, a Pioneer DJM-800($1600) which was also setup with a Pioneer EFX-1000 ($800). As far as I could tell, he used everything that he brought and used it well.

I like the video which tells all about the working of DJ gear and its specification which is purely incorporated in the concern given video.Between prices, quality, performance and suitability to your particular DJ style or working DJ gigs, there are a lot of variables to factor in when buying a DJ product, but we don’t go there, because that’s for you, the working DJ himself, to decide.
dj equipment
I personally think he represents a new breed of Electronic music performer.I love watching him in the studio. I don't know of any other artist that streams themselves in the studio.
joel also has an ALLEN & HEATH XONE 3D all in one midi mixer he likes to use
well, first of all, it's not "DJ GEAR", he's not a dj, he's a producer and live perfomer, what he does it's called "Live Act" because he ensambles his music live, if he we're a dj he probably would play some other people's music and stuff like that…the monome is a MIDI controller who uses to trigger loops, samples, effects and stuff like that, and lemur is another midi controller with touchscreen technology wich he uses to control ableton live, and ableton live is a sotware that is used both studio music production and live performance, as it is in this case, he has all his different kind of loops divided in clips inside ableton, audio clips from percussions, from kicks, basses, snares and claps, etc. and he just triggers and ensambles his tracks live….that's the basic idea anyways…hope this info has been helpfull….cheers.
thanks for the response.. I agree with some of your points but I think you are thinking about this to hard. what is a DJ anyway? A disk jockey in the literal translation.. but in more simple terms I think it's a person who selects and plays music whether its on vinyl, cds, loops, or samplers… and rocks the party… and makes people dance… pure and simple. so whatever yo want to call it DJ / producer / performer / party rocker… he is mos def all of the above.
well, that's precisely the point…if he's not a dj, why should we be calling him one?…and it's not just in the forums….deadmau5 himself has explained many many times that he's not a dj, he gets mad with that kind of comparising…the point is to creat concoiusness on people so they can recognize the work that an artist makes to "rock the party" … DJ= just download some tunes and burn them into a cd or even a usb memory / PRODUCER= hours in the studio just separating his tracks into loops, + hours to configure his controllers and equipment so the people can listen to a really unique and quality live session (not to mention hours to create his own tracks). now don't get me wrong, there are some really good dj's who spend hours listening to music, buying, traiding, etc. and they do magic on the cdplayers or turntables, but most of the so called "dj's" just download free mp3's from blogs and play them at parties….it's like…you probably pay to see your favorite band playing live in a concert but you probably wouldn't pay to see a dude playing cd's of your favorite bands and call it a "concert"…that's the difference between a dj and a producer.
