INTERVIEW
by Graham Robinson
What type of music do you play?
I like tribal house, progressive house, but my main love is
hard house.
What companies or labels are you under?
Tidy Trax records.
Have you have any tracks or compilations out of your own?
Not at the moment, but next year (2002) we've got Cd's coming
out planned for July. And the Tidy Girls EP 2.. that would
be with me, Lisa Pin-up, Lisa Lashes, and Anne Savage. So
that will be comin out in March (2002). That's huge..
How long have you been a DJ?
About 4 1/2 years.
How did you first get into the scene?
My ex-boyfriend used to DJ and all his friends. To be honest
it was just a hobby and I didn't want to do it. I didnt have
the guts. And then he was playing at this huge gig with 3000
people and I went with him. He just got out of the DJ booth
and the record was getting shorter and shorter. I he was like
"Go on." I was like "Oh my god!" I just had to do it and got
over my fear and have done it proffesionally ever since.
What are some other DJ's or producers that you admire?
Alot of people from Tidy Trax that I work with. Dany Tenaglia
actually.
What has been your best experience with Djing so far?
Getting to travel really.. This summer I had a residency at
Es Paradis is Ibiza on a Sunday night and I did Charlies Angels
on a Tuesday. So I got to go out Sunday morning and stay there
until Wednesday every week. And it was tiring but it was like
"Oh it's Ibiza again!" So I really enjoyed it, and I'm back
again this year so... it's my second home.
Do you prepare your sets before hand?
I just go with it.. I know when you play the same type of
music all the time you know what kinda goes well with that.
You just got to know your tunes really..
Any more Canadian dates planned?
Well I just spoke to the promoter and he says "We want you
to come back!" So ya, cool!
Do you prefer clubs or biggers shows?
I just get a buzz off the music. And whether you're playing
to 3 people or 3000.. Whatever, I just get a buzz from all
of it to be honest.
What do you do when your not traveling across the world
to DJ?
Chill out, hang out with friends that don't know anything
about DJ'ing or don't want to talk about it. Going down the
coast. I am learning how to surf (laughs)
Hows that going for ya?
Uh ya.. Moving swiftly on. (laughs)
Have you always been into music?
Yah, I've always loved music..
Were you in the high school band?
I was in the choir for a while but... I was told not to come
back. (laughs)
What has been the most embarassing moment in your career?
I was playing in a club up north to about 2000 people. I had
this new top and it was very cute and it was held at the back
with pieces of thread with little beads. Obviously not the
sort of top that you jump around in, and I was jumping around..
and the back snapped and all the beads fell to the floor and
I couldnt wear a bra underneath it either. so I finished the
rest of my set holding my top up, and I had to DJ 1 handed.
Yeah, that was probably the most embarassing.
What was the story behind you getting signed on with Tidy
Trax?
I happened about 2 months ago. Aparently they had been spying
on me for about 6 months and watching my career. And speaking
to people. Then they rang me up and one of the guys came down
to see me play and then we had a meeting and it happened like
that.
How has your music style changed throughout your career?
I do play most music styles right from funky house to tribal
house, but it has to have a bit of a hard edge to it. So maybe
the music styles have changed but it always got a hard edge
if you know what I mean.
How do you compare Vancouver with the club scene back in
the UK?
It was a good atmosphere here tonight. I like how people dressed
up. Back in the UK they wouldnt do that. They would be too
bothered about what they look like.
