Four year's after Mezzanine, Massive Attack is back: They have just announced that they would be releasing two albums in the next 12 months. They also plan to go on tour.
The first album should be out in early 2003. To give you an idea of how much work has been put into this project, It was streamlined from 850 tracks to only 12 tracks. The next cd should be out after their tour (in about 12 month's time). All three founding members (Robert '3-D' Del Naja, Andrew "Mushroom" Vowles, and Grant "Daddy G" Marshall) have worked on it.
As always, they have other contributors. On this next cd Sinead O'Connor has done vocals on two different tracks.
It's pretty uncommon for a group to have been together such a long time and yet to have produced so few albums. The trio has worked together since 1983 (as the Wild Bunch collective) and since 1988 as Massive Attack. But, this next album will only be their fourth. In the meantime they have not been idle. They have been working with other artists and making music for soundtracks. As well, they are quite politically active. In 2002 Massive Attack participated in two fundraisers. The first one, in December, raised money for the Red Cross and in March they did a benefit for CND. The shows also created awareness to the real issues in Afghanistan and the nuclear arms race in both India and Pakistan. Recently 3-D has been trying to stir up opposition to Britain's acquiescence to the US in regards to the new war in Iraq
